Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees lays down the guidelines, key areas of activity, and general concepts for the Foundation's work. It approves the annual work programme, appoints the Executive Committee and ensures that it operates in line with the Foundation's objectives. It approves the budget and ratifies the actions of the Executive Committee.

Michael Kretschmer, born 1975 in Goerlitz, was a member of the German Bundestag from 2002 to 2017. From 2009 to 2017 he was a vice chair of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group responsible for education and research as well as arts, culture and media. Since 13 December 2017, he is Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony.

Bärbel Dieckmann is president of Welthungerhilfe. She was mayor of Bonn from 1994 to 2009. Since 1972, she has been a member of the SPD. Between 2003 and 2009 she was a member of the executive board of the SPD and from 1999 to 2009 she was a member of the party executive. Her political activities have focused on environmental and development policy as well as youth, family welfare and education policy. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Development and Peace Foundation (SEF) and the German Sustainability Award Foundation. She is also a member of the advisory board for the Arnold-Bergstraesser Institute and of DGVN’s presidium (United Nations Association of Germany). Among other things, she was chairperson of the World Mayors' Council on Climate Change (founded on the occasion of the 11th Conference on the Parties on Climate Change), executive president of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (Brussels) and member of the policy committee of the Association of German Cities. Bärbel Dieckmann studied philosophy, history and social sciences at the University of Bonn and was a teacher between 1974 and 1995, most recently as director of studies at a comprehensive school and grammar schools. She has held the position of honorary president of Welthungerhilfe since 2008.

Christian Rickerts is the state secretary for Energy and Digital Affairs in the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, with a background in political science. He is co-founder of the Association Schüler Helfen Leben and was later the Director of the Foundation with the same name. From 2009-2012, Christian Rickerts served as the Managing Director at Reporters Without Boarders in Germany. Later he became the Vice President Corporate Communications at the Bertelsmann Foundation and in 2015 the Executive Chairman for Wikimedia Germany.

Dr. Imme Scholz is deputy director of the German Development Institute (DIE – Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik). Between 2002-2009, she was head of the environmental department at DIE where she set up a team working on adaptation to climate change. She has published extensively on climate change and development; capacity development in environment; institutional development and environmental policy in developing countries; natural resource management, particularly sustainable forest use
In the 1980s, she studied sociology at the Free University of Berlin where she also obtained the degree of Dr. phil. for a thesis on the determinants for entrepreneurial innovation capacity in the Amazon tropical timber industry. She started her professional career as assistant to the economic attaché of the Chilean Embassy in Bonn (1990 – 1992) and became a research fellow at DIE in 1992. Between 1999 and 2002, she was on leave and worked as an environmental policy advisor in the Brazilian Amazon for German development cooperation.

Octavian Ursu, born in 1967 in Bucharest, has been living in Görlitz since 1990, where he got involved in local political affairs very early. In the autumn of 2014 the former musician got elected to the Saxon Parliament, where he became vice chairman of the Working Committee of Science and Higher Education, Culture and Media as well as member of the European Committee. Furthermore he was appointed to the curatorship of the “Sächsischen Landeszentrale für politische Bildung” (State Committee of Political Education) and is member of the Saxon Cultural Senate.
